Collett Family

The history currently only goes back to John Collett, born about 1840 probably in Middlesex or West London, England. The family eventually moved from Fulham to Morden in Surrey in the 1930s when the St Helier Estate was built to re-house inner city residents. At the time it was one of the largest such developments built by the London County Council. After the war (1939-1945) the family started to disperse to County Kerry in Ireland, Stourbridge in the West Midlands, and eventually via Epsom in Surrey to Andover in Hampshire.

There is thought to be some connection to North Bay, Ontario, Canada through my grandmother, Dorothy May Collett who visited relatives there in 1967.

Dorothy May Collett and William Collett were married 5 December 1915 in St Johns’ Church, Fulham, London,. They had 3 children:

  • Dorothy Louise Collett born 5 August 1926, died 30 November 1980 in Southampton
  • Leonard Julius Collett born 14 April 1920 died April 1986 in Stourbridge, West Midlands.
  • Richard William Collett born 1917 died 22 June 1992 in Tralee, County Kerry

Through this project contact has been established with the Irish Colletts (i.e.from Richard William Collett and his wife Joan O’Sullivan ), and work goes on to try to fill numerous gaps, particularly the history of John Collett, John Morgan Collett and William Collett
